The next step is exploring what these pillars or principles of development design are and how they work, or even more frequently, how failure to use them well affects the way we get to our destinations, our goals, our fate.
Who is ‘WE’? This is important. In my opnion, the ‘development’ I refer to is for any entity that has had an objective of growing socio-economically. Or a desire to improve their economic state from what it is now. Such entities ranges from our small business set-ups, large organizations (companies), sectors (or sector-wide or just distinct value chain networks), programs or projects, district or counties (within a country) that wish to establish and develop themselves. It could also be countries considering their national development plans. The four development design pillars ARE vital to the success of all these entities. In Africa the rate of success in ou economic endeavours has not been something to happily sing about.
In my opinion – and in subsequent posts I will strive to demonstrate this – the slow growth rates and/or dismal performance has been due to inadequate consideration and application of those four principles. I wish to use this blog space for postulation, presentation of investigative findings and debate, as to how growth has been a success or failure in those entitiies. Anyone with related a view is welcome to contribute.
I will present my own observations or experiences I have learned from efforts and results of small business entities (kiosks, consultancies, professional services, etc.), economic sectors, in the light of targeted business growth (e.g. coffee, hoticulture, tourism, education), county performance (or districts establishing and implementing a development agenda for their people) to countries following national development policies. In my postulatiion, I will be using my observations and opinions but invite debate and evidence either in support of or contradicting my opnion and reasons for that. I may be wrong or right. It does not matter; share your views with reason. Let’s make it educational.
I invite readers and visitors to use information shared to suggest adjustments for any entity for more effective reaching of goals. Remember the focus is on the four pillars – innovative thinking, well-laid strategies and plans, proper implementation, and evaluation of progress and use of lessons for corrective action – to get to desired economic goals, more effectively and efficiently.
So let’s start the journey. Watch for the cases, read, contribute, question, challenge, etc. Let’s see what our maps are like – looking back, looking into the future and drafting fresh routes for desired target destinations. Let’s hear what in your opinion, is required get to get where we want to be more succesfully THAN WE ARE DOING NOW! And, as time goes by, let’s evaluate to see if our sugestions were vindicated, … justified. How good are we as economic development leaders?
